Who is Northbrook Academy for?
High school and college students getting ready for their financial firsts: a first job, first paycheck, first credit card, first apartment. Northbrook Academy is for anyone who is looking for the financial education they missed in school and would like the opportunity to personalize financial education into a financial strategy that works for them!
Northbrook Academy is also for parents and relatives who want to see their children head into adulthood knowing how money actually works, and then do something about it.
Do I need to know anything about money before starting?
No. The course starts with money basics and builds from there, with no complicated jargon. If you’ve ever looked at a pay stub and wondered where the rest of it went, you’re in the right place.
Can I talk to a real person?
Yes. Northbrook Academy offers one-on-one financial coaching with a certified Northbrook Academy coach who can help personalize financial education into a financial strategy for you to act on. Northbrook coaches listen, analyze, and provide guidance and suggestions for smart financial decisions. Learn about coaching.
What does the Northbrook Financial Literacy Course actually cover?
Nine modules: Money and You, Banking Basics, Cash Flow, Debt and Credit, Investing Basics, Assets and Liabilities, Understanding Taxes, and Insurance. The last module brings it all together and includes a downloadable checklist so you leave with your own financial roadmap.
How is this different from other financial literacy courses?
Most programs focus on information and definitions. Northbrook focuses on decisions and behavior: how emotions affect money choices, why systems beat willpower, how small habits compound and why people overspend. You practice making the call in real-world scenarios instead of memorizing terms.
How do the lessons work?
Lessons are interactive and built around real-world scenarios. Assessments check your understanding along the way, and progress tracking shows where you left off, so you can learn at your own pace.
How long does it take to finish?
Most modules take anywhere between 25 and 45 minutes to complete. The entire course can typically be completed in 4 to 8 hours, depending on your pace.
Will Northbrook tell me what to invest in?
No. Northbrook teaches how investing, credit, insurance and taxes work so you can make your own informed decisions. It doesn’t recommend specific investments, products or companies.
What’s the best age to start?
There is a saying in investing that the best time to invest was yesterday, and the second-best time is today. We believe that the earlier someone becomes financially empowered, the better. We mostly work with high school and college students, early-career professionals, and newlywed couples. However, Northbrook Academy is designed to help anyone looking to understand how money works and then apply that knowledge to build a successful financial future.
Can parents see how their teen is doing?
Anyone taking the Northbrook Academy online course will set up their own unique username and password to access the course and track progress. Students may share their login information with parents or anyone else, but parents will not have their own separate login to track the student’s progress.
